Artificial intelligence is hitting the global labor market “like a tsunami,” International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Monday. Georgieva stated that AI is likely to impact 60% of jobs in advanced economies and 40% of jobs worldwide in the next two years. Speaking at an event organized by the Swiss Institute of International Studies in Zurich, she emphasized the urgency of preparing people and businesses for this shift. Georgieva highlighted the potential for AI to significantly boost productivity if managed well but warned of the risks of increased misinformation and inequality. She also noted that the global economy has become more susceptible to shocks, referencing the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, and anticipated further shocks due to the climate crisis, despite the economy’s resilience.
