The Chinese city of Wuhan, one of the country’s largest urban centers, aims to become a leader in autonomous transportation by offering self-driving cars at extremely low prices. Fares start at 4 yuan (55 cents) for a 6-mile trip, compared to 18 yuan ($2.48) for a traditional taxi ride.

Apollo Go, a subsidiary of the tech giant Baidu, operates a fleet of 500 autonomous vehicles covering much of the city and plans to expand the fleet to 1,000 vehicles by the end of 2024. This expansion comes as the city has approximately 17,000 traditional taxis.

The company is using these low prices to attract users and encourage them to try the new technology, benefiting from discounts and government subsidies during the initial launch phase. China, already the world’s largest car market, is expected to play a significant role in the future development of the autonomous vehicle market.
