The government of Iraq is advancing its first significant solar power project to promote environmental sustainability. French energy company TotalEnergies secured contracts to build a 1-gigawatt solar plant as part of a $27 billion investment over 30 years. This initiative aims to diversify energy sources, reduce gas flaring from oil operations, and develop the Ratawi oil and gas field while establishing a gas hub. Additionally, a water intake project is planned for oil reservoir injection. solar power project in Iraq, led by TotalEnergies, marks the country’s first venture into large-scale solar energy. While other solar initiatives are in the works, TotalEnergies’ project is the first to advance to implementation. TotalEnergies expects the plant to become one of the largest clean solar facilities in the Middle East and North Africa, capable of powering 350,000 homes. Completion is scheduled for 2025 across four stages.
